How Should I Hire a Speeding Ticket Lawyer?

choosing a seattle traffic attorney
Choosing a speeding ticket lawyer to help you out is no small task. There are a lot of people out there offering their services, and most are saying the same things. “I’m experience. I’m great. People love me.”

So how do you separate the good from the bad and pick the right fit for you?

Hopefully by the time you’re done reading this article you’ll have your answer.

Take a Look at Their Website

This is probably the most obvious thing to do. And it’s probably something you’ve already done. I’m guessing that’s why you are here.

But I want you to dig a little bit deeper.

Instead of just looking at the home page, click around a little bit more. Click on their about page and see if they give you any information about who they are. And, read that information to see if it’s up to date. If they don’t care about their image on the web, are they going to care about your image and reputation?

Click on their blog tab and see if they’ve contributed to their own site lately. Read the articles and see if they make sense and are helpful or if they are full of fluff. Think about what their participation on their own web site says about their willingness to stay up to date on what the latest trends the best speeding ticket lawyer’s use to get ahead.

Click on the contact me page and see if they have an actual office that you can go to if you want. See if they have phone number and email addresses clearly spelled out. If they seem like they are hold to get in touch with, is that a good thing?

Check Out Their Reviews

The internet has turned us into reviewing machines. And, I can tell you from experience, the best speeding ticket lawyer I know actively seeks out reviews from former clients to let new clients know what the experience was like.

Here are a couple of place you can look for reviews:

  1. Yelp

  2. Avvo

  3. Facebook

I can tell you we take a lot of pride in the reviews we’ve received from our former clients in each of those places.

One special note when it comes to reviews. If you are looking at avvo.com you should look for our names specifically: Christopher Small; Erika Wunderlich; and Stryder Wegener. If you are on Facebook or Yelp, search for Emerald City Law Group to find us.

Call a Seattle Speeding Ticket Lawyer Up

You wouldn’t believe how many times you will pick up the phone to call someone for help and you get a busy signal or a full voice mail box, or just a voice mail box generally.

If the person you’re trying to talk to isn’t there when you are trying to give them money, do you think they are going to be there when you have a question?

We take a lot of pride in our communication. In fact, I will guarantee you that any time you call, day or night, someone alive will answer the phone to help you out. That’s how important you are to us.

Choosing a Lawyer Based Solely on Price

Some of you may consider looking around on the internet and choosing help based solely on price. And that’s fine. Just be prepared to get what you paid for.

I can safely tell you we are not the cheapest speeding ticket lawyer out there. I can also tell you we aren’t the most expensive. We set our fees based on the value provided, and we know one ticket can raise your insurance premiums for up to three years. That’s serious money.

And when you spend serious money you should get serious value. Think about that when making your hiring decision.

How I Beat Most Speeding Tickets (it’s called Lidar)

How I beat lidar speeding tickets

Today is your lucky day. I’m pulling back the curtain on the way that I beat most speeding tickets. By the time you are done reading this post, you will be smarter than 99% of your friends. Guaranteed.

A Word of Caution About how I Beat Most Speeding Tickets

Everything I said above is true. When I am through here you will be armed with valuable information that could actually help you beat your speeding ticket on your own.

But, before you go blazing a trail to the courthouse to fight your speeding ticket, I want to give you a word of caution.

While this is the way I beat most speeding tickets, it still represents a relatively small percentage of tickets I win (probably 30% or so). The rest of the time I’m using the rest of the arrows in my quiver or coming up with some new, sneaky theory to beat tickets.

I want to share this with you to give you a window into what I do for my clients. But, know by the time you are reading this you are going to know enough just to be dangerous.

Lidar in a Nutshell

There are generally one of three ways the officer can determine you were speeding. Either by pace, which is where the officer uses his own speedometer to clock your speed, by radar, or by laser. Laser is the most recent addition to an officer’s collection of speed measuring tools. It is also supposed to be the most accurate and difficult to beat. Though it may be more accurate than the other ways, there is still a way to beat a ticket.

Let’s start with how the laser method works. The laser speed measuring devices are referred to as “lidar” which stands for light detection and ranging. The way lidar works is that is relies on infrared light reflection rather than the Doppler shift, which is what radar uses. Lidar measures the round trip time for the infrared light to reach a car and reflect back. This amount of time is measured, is then computed into a distance, and the change in the distance provides the car’s speed.

So How do I beat Lidar Speeding Tickets?

For the court to accept the speed reading the cop has to prove to the court that the laser gun was working properly at the time he used it.

My job is to convince the court that the cop didn’t do what he was supposed to. And to do this I typically use the cop’s own documents.

The first thing the cop has to do is test the lidar against an external standard. After that he has to do an internal diagnostics check, a fixed distance test, a heads up display (HUD) alignment test, and a differential distance test.

Frequently the officers will list that these tests were indeed performed on the affidavit but fail to state what the results of these tests are. This is known as the “no result” argument. If the officer fails to state what the results of the tests were, how do I (and more importantly the judge) know the Lidar was in proper working order?

We can’t. And when the judge can’t be sure, they have no choice but to dismiss the ticket.

This is a sure winner and something I look for in every one of my Lidar speeding ticket cases.

How to Beat a Speeding Ticket: Radar Gun Certification

Get a speeding ticket and feel like you’ve got no chance to beat it because the cop caught you by using a radar gun? That may not be the case. Read below for a tip on how to beat a speeding ticket by making sure the radar gun certification is correct.

0:45 One thing a traffic attorney always checks when fighting a speeding ticket

A Bad Radar Gun Certification Can Invalidate the Reading

Cop with radar gun

Speed measuring devices (radar guns, laser guns, etc.) are used by cops every day. We all know about them. And they are responsible for the issuance of thousands of speeding tickets.

But, the same use of these radar guns is also the reason many traffic tickets are dismissed every year.

Speed measuring devices are considered to be scientific instruments by the courts. Because of that, the prosecutor has to present some very specific information to the court for the court to accept the results as valid.

Knowing what that stuff is the prosecutor has to present is how you can beat this ticket.

One of the things the prosecutor has to demonstrate (and the topic of the video) is that the officer checked the calibration of the radar gun before and after his shift. They have to do this to ensure the speed measuring device was working properly during the shift.

If he forgets to do that, or forgets to note that in his report, you’ve got a great argument for dismissal of your speeding ticket.

What to do when You get a Speeding Ticket with a Deferral Pending

Podcast: Download

In this episode of the podcast I talk about what to do when you get a speeding ticket (or other moving violation while you have a deferral pending.

Highlights:

00:20 – Definition of deferred traffic ticket.

01:15 – What you should do if you get a new speeding ticket while on deferral.

01:45 – What a traffic attorney can do for you in this situation.

02:04 – One strategy we use to help you win your deferral AND your new speeding ticket.

Getting a Speeding Ticket While a Deferral is Pending Brings Double Trouble

speeding ticket lawyer

The deferral is supposed to be used as a last resort (I know we typically do everything we can to avoid using deferrals for our clients). You can only use one every seven years, and you are basically making a deal with the court where you automatically lose if you find yourself in front of a cop that wants to be a jerk and write you a speeding ticket for 5 miles over the limit.

Today we’re talking about some strategies you can use if you find yourself in that precarious position of getting a new traffic ticket while you have a deferral pending. There are some things that can be done to both beat the new ticket and keep the deferral with the old ticket, but you’ve got to know what you’re doing.

In this Episode I Talk About:

  • What a deferred ticket actually is;
  • Why getting a new speeding ticket while a deferral is pending is double the trouble;
  • Some strategies we use to win both the deferral AND the new ticket; and
  • Much much more!
